Only A Stone's Throw Away
The barbed wire fence looks menacing as usual,
The uniformed guards stand guard like a ritual,
Demarcating the lands of bondage and freedom,
Just across the fence lies the carefree kingdom
Only a stone's throw away.
In their hundreds they come with belongings none,
Still hoping to cross over when the day is done,
Though death sits on the electrified wires,
Comforting thoughts flash of warm home fires
Only a stone's throw away.
Two brave youngsters, a sister and brother,
Though to him it was the burden of another,
Brave it together like in a trance,
Not a moment have they at "Eden" to glance,
Only a stone's throw away.
But alas! The lass in the wire is caught,
The lad's heart was broken, he could do but naught,
With haunting memories of her burning in his heart,
Walks into freedom beyond the rampart
Only a stone's throw away!
