Grey Day

It's cold and damp today,
There's not a sunny ray,
The birds have gone missing
And the bees aren't buzzing,
O where is sparkling May
When all is bright and gay?
Green branches swishing,
Little creatures dashing,
They all seem far away
And it's gloomy and grey.
A sky that looks fetching
Is for what I'm wishing;
Warm and golden sunshine
Bubbling to rhythmic time,
Making all things glow,
Banishing the low;
But nature apportions power
Fairly to higher and lower,
Unlike our bias and partiality
To fleeting wealth and beauty.
Favouritism's knocked out of place,
Merit's overtaken the race;
The hare stands in shame
While the tortoise finds fame.
Who can contend with nature
Levelling every feature?
All action ends in reaction,
Every tread demands caution,
For the humble clouds in fray
Can send the mighty sun astray.
